A Brief History

Upon This Rock Community Garden was started by the late Pastor Irene Elsie Roachford of Upon This Rock I Will My Church Assembly, Inc. (UTRIWBMCAI) located two lots from the garden. It was opened in 1983 under the Green Thump Project which is now New York City Parks Green Thumb. The mission of the gardeners is to beautify the neighborhood, discourage dumping on vacant lots, and provide the community with produce grown in Brooklyn, New York. The members of UTRIWBMCAI are very active in the administration of the garden and also in the planning and planting of fruits and vegetables. The garden is open twice a week for the community to participate in the planting and reaping of the fruits and vegetables or to just talk about the plants in the garden beds, and those that grow at will throughout the garden.  Children are encouraged to visit the garden to plant seeds and watch them grow over time. The children and members of the community are also given the opportunity to participate in other activities in the garden.
